Black gram or black lentil is known as urad dal in Hindi and “MASHA” in texts of Ayurveda. Black gram is mostly cultivated in South Asia. The plant of this bean is an annual herb and it is vertical & hairy. It has a tap root which diverges to form branched roots. The cylindrical pod of this plant is usually six cm long and contains seeds.
Nutritional facts: Black gram is rich in vitamins and minerals and contains no cholesterol. It is a storehouse of calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese etc. It also has vitamins and dietary fibers. Due to its high potassium content urad dal acts as an aphrodisiac. High blood pressure occurs due to high sodium levels and low potassium levels and black gram is rich in potassium. Hence it helps to balance sodium potassium levels and relieve hypertension or high blood pressure. There is a strong linkage between hypertension or high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction. As potassium assists to reduce high blood pressure, it likewise helps in erectile dysfunction as well.
Medicinal properties of Black gram or urad dal:
As per the texts of Ayurveda, black bean is heavy to digest and increases the moisture of body tissues. All these properties enable normalizing or calming vitiated Vata. Consumption of this bean increases Kapha and Pitta.
Imbalanced Vata dosha causes multiple diseases and also leads to men’s health problems like erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, low sperm count and motility etc. Hence Ayurveda acharyas advise the use of this lentil for multiple health conditions.
Anti-inflammatory properties: According to the principles of Ayurveda vitiation of Vata causes inflammation of tissues and triggers the sensation of pain. This Urad dal normalizes Vata and therefore has anti-inflammatory properties. Usually, a hot bandage of black gram is used for inflammation of joints and muscle pain. Massaging with the herbal oil of this wonderful herb helps to relieve pain and inflammation.
Nervous system disorders: The herb from the plant of black lentils strengthens the nervous system. Ayurveda acharyas suggest preparations of this herb for nervous debility, partial paralysis, facial paralysis and other conditions which involve the nervous system.
Disorders of the digestive system: “Vigna Mungo” or “Masha” allows increasing in the bulk of stools. The moistness-increasing property along with bulk increasing quality helps in easy bowel movement. Thus usage of this bean is suggested in conditions like constipation, piles and colic. This herb is also a good liver stimulant.
Action on male reproductive system: Texts of Ayurveda applaud the aphrodisiac properties of black gram. It improves sperm count and sperm motility. It is very useful in erectile dysfunction (impotence) and premature ejaculation.
Action on the female reproductive system: This herb is useful in dysmenorrhea and primary amenorrhea. It boosts milk secretion in lactating mothers.
Additionally, the medicinal properties of black gram also help in increasing body bulk and body energy level. It strengthens the body and increases lifespan.
